MCA/Universal Studios LA Top Deck Expansion
Movie Set Buildings, Universal City, CA

With no available flat land, we participated in the design of a terraced 8-story parking structure with 2,700 new parking spaces. This created over 200,000 SF of new tour expansion facilties which we master planned and designed. We created 50,000 SF of character buildings—the Moulin Rouge District, American Grafitti Plaza, Irma La Duce Courtyard—representing sets from famous movies. They were constructed as working buildings to house cafes, restaurants, retail stores and offices and were used for filming at night. We also designed a special event amphitheater seating 2,500 people in an “expo” atmosphere. This project won an AIA Design Award in 1990.
