Maui, HI

Design of a heavy timber and all wood ocean front retail resort complex of five structures spanning a seasonal stream/ canyon. Structure spanned the canyon with dining and bar bridges connecting to restaurant, and spa and health club on each side. Beach rentals, retail sales, check-in and sales for resort housing were on the beach level. The project was the first of its type on Maui. Significance: Heavy timber Port Orford cedar Post & Beam design was first of its kind in Hawaii. Convinced architects that wood was a viable construction material if good detailing and proper wood species were used that could defeat the weather and termites and started a resurgence of use of wood in Hawaii away from commonly used concrete block.
