DOUGLAS S. EWING
President, FAIA
The influences for Ewing’s exceptional practice began when he was an 18-year old apprentice in the nationally acclaimed South Pasadena office of Smith & Williams, who were recognized for innovative, award winning contemporary wood and recreational/resort projects around the world. Ewing’s notable creativity and design skills were developed from this experience and the influences of the California Arts & Crafts vernacular.
With a lifelong respect for the environment and love of craft, Ewing demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable design practices in all of his projects. With his exceptional design ability, he artfully transmits the feeling of place and history in his buildings by using sustainable, indigenous and reclaimed materials, xeriscaping, minimal grading, tree preservation, maximum natural light, and new energy technologies. Ewing strives to understand the forces that give a sense of place, history and meaning to both progressive and modern architecture with each job he designs.
Over the years, Ewing has given his time to various community groups, providing pro bono work for the Boy Scouts, a local City Youth Center, the local AIA Chapter and for Romberger Guild Group Home in South Pasadena. He has given lectures to students at a number of architecture schools, discussing his office process, research and new techniques.
Ewing has served as Director of the AIA, AIA Awards juror, State Examiner for the California Architects Licensing Oral Exams, City Planning Commissioner, City Design Review Board member and lectured at various schools, AIA events and architectural tours of his projects. He has received numerous AIA Design Awards as well as regional, state and national awards from various other organizations. He is also a member of the National AIA Committee on Design.
